Once you get proficient at spotting the ramps and landing the jumps, its possible to run the bulk of any given course with the afterburners on.īesides the jumps there are also power-ups littered about the track for a range of offensive and defensive abilities, as well as a multitude of cars and tracks to unlock by going through the games tournament circuit. Land a flip or a roll successfully, and you are rewarded with a quick nitro-like burst. In order to gain quick boosts while racing, the player needs to jump their car off ramps scattered throughout the tracks and complete stunts. The original piece EA adds to this automotive mosaic is the slightly off-the-wall approach to speed. What I mean by that is Rumble Racing seems to have borrowed features from several other games and incorporated them into one unit. The game starts off like a standard arcade-style racer, but the thing that drew my attention was the "little bit of everything" approach. Rumble Racing, the semi-official sequel to Electronic Arts NASCAR Rumble, is the latest racing game that seems to change up the formula enough to warrant a look. The last racing game that met the criteria was Rage Racer, which was arcadey enough to get the hang of quickly, with enough upgrades to keep it fresh-but not bogged down in minutiae like the too-realistic Gran Turismo. As a result of too many games with not enough innovation, it takes a car game with something extra to really catch my eye. In my opinion, recently there hasnt been a lot to make any one particular title stand out from the others unless youre a car game aficionado. Unfortunately, with the overabundance of driving games available on practically any system out there, the genre seems to have become quite over saturated from where Im standing. While Im not the worlds biggest racing fan, I do enjoy the scent of a freshly burned patch of rubber every now and then. After a few races, you won't want to put the controller down. Its pretty rare that a racing game comes out which is different enough to perk my interest. Rumble Racing's arcade-style gameplay will keep your attention with its speed and difficulty. Rumble Racing includes 15 tracks (with some sweet shortcuts), 36 assorted vehicles, and 3 levels gameplay (Rookie, Pro, and Elite). There are 12 power-ups, some that help and some that hurt, including Shockwave, Nitro, Bad Gas, and the incredible Twister that destroys everything in its path (and looks awesome too)! If you haven't played either game yet, they both incorporate elements of arcade street racing with the addition of power-ups for blasting your opponents off the road. In fact, if the some of the courses aren't identical, they are at least very, very close. Rumble Racing is actually very similar to the previous NASCAR Rumble released by EA for the PSX. This is also a great way to practice for the big race, as you will need all of the help you can get to complete the game with the fastest possible time. The Stunt Challenge is a blast as you perform tricks in order to increase your speed and win the race. Along with Championship mode, Rumble Racing includes Single Race, a 1-on-1 showdown in which 2 players compete in a one lap race, and Stunt Challenge mode. No more taking turns to unlock the items in the game. One of the coolest features is the ability to play either 1 or 2 players in Championship mode (which is a blast!). There are tons of gameplay modes and options in Rumble Racing.
